The beep of the monitors is loud with her head this eerily silent. Whatever he did to her, between the needles and questioning, he separated it. Took something. Now that static in her head is far quieter. It's almost as maddening as when it was present.

Now she's almost lonely without it. Well- she was lonely before, but now even more so.

She doesn't sleep, no. It's not safe to sleep anymore. She wants to scream every time she's left alone, but it's not practical to have someone with her all the time. Prism is dead, the Gatherer is dead, but the way she goes back to that place every time she shuts her eyes.

So she lays in a space between waking and sleep, startling back to consciousness every tie she starts to drift. Shaking. Thinking about it. What it did to her.

She reaches up to smooth a finger over the gauze covering what used to be her right eye.

Ruined. He ruined her worse than the church did. The mental, the physical.

Everything. Ruined.

She wishes they'd have killed her when they found her.

But she's also a coward, and afraid of death, so here she sits and lets the stitches heal.

The paper is held in her slightly trembling hands, she examines it as if it might burst into flames until Kay tells her to stay put.

"Yeah I'll try not to go for a jog or anything."

Like she could even get out of bed if she wanted to.

She'd maybe make it ten feet.

And Kay returns, holding some random robot contraption that was probably meant to hold something together, but when propped upright could be used as a desk.

"There. Now you don't have to work as hard."

She takes her seat again, smiling and reaching over, starting the project as a demonstration.

"You fold it into a triangle, first."

Vandal watches with a vague, detached fascination, copying what Kay does to the best of her ability. Her hands shake though, and it takes a moment of fumbling for her even to do that simple thing.

Start off slow, she supposes.

"Okay... what next?"

You'd think Vandal had just won the World Series from the way Kay reacts. Her face explodes into a smile, giving a little fist pump, NEARLY falling off her seat. Thankfully, she's got enough coordination to avoid that.

"Perfect! You did it even better than I did. And I'm a master."

She takes the paper again, folding it one more time, making it into a smaller triangle. Once she's finished, she holds it up to Vandal as a demonstration, flipping it up and down to show her.

Vandal can't help but look a little dubious. Kay is just so. Energetic. But she just shrugs and follows Kay's instructions to the best of her ability.

This isn't terribly hard, though it's just the beginning she imagines. It will probably get harder. She's still a bit sloppy with shaking hands, but she's trying.

Fine movements are difficult.

The shaky movements are only met with more enthusiasm. Because really, Kay will take anything that can be seen as improvement. It meant Vandal was getting better, even if slowly.

"Perfect. Now comes the fun part. We make holes in the paper just like this, either with scissors or a knife."

She'd actually been using the edge of her crow emblem to cut it out, and detaches it from her scarf.

"I don't have either, so we'll use this. The tip's sharp enough."

She tapped her finger on the tip of the 'wing'.

Vandal can only nod dumbly watching with rapt attention. She can see where this is going, but she's the least artistic person in the universe, so she waits for Kay to demonstrate.

"If I had my tools..." Too bad she left them at her house. The thought of going there makes her skin crawl though.

"Anyways..." She motions for Kay to go on.

"Don't worry, you can borrow this. It cuts really nicely!"

She didn't want Vandal to think about that place. If it's anything like how Kay felt about the courtroom lobby...There's a slight shudder as she tries to get that out of her mind, running the edge of the badge along the paper. And it actually makes a rather clean cut.

"It's harder to get the smaller cuts, but we'll start with big ones. Making triangles here is a good way to do it," she pointed to the folded edge of the paper as she talked, running it along where she cut.

"I'll let you do the other half." She placed the badge in Vandal's hand, and gently took her wrist, running it along the other edge, just to help apply force.

She's grateful for the help, even if she does feel very lame, not even able to push hard enough to cut paper on her own. But that's the truth of the matter.

Big, strong Vandal, crippled and shown for what she really is. She focuses entirely on the task at hand, trying to copy what Kay did. A series of crooked triangles.

Just watching her...it's a great thing to see. Sure, those triangles are crooked, but...they were triangles. And that meant...they'd become straight with practice. Vandal would get better.

She wasn't lost yet.

"See? Each one is different, just like a real snowflake!"
