WHO: Saber (
pendragon) and Ventus (
happyduckbutt)
WHERE: Alpha Trion's Quadrant, Lakeside
WHEN: Now's as good as any
WHAT: Getting in a little magic practice
WARNINGS: --
With all the reports of attacks happening of late, Ventus was concerned about what the implications could be. He'd heard from Cliffjumper that once creatures had streamed in from the Badlands, unmarked by Glyphs and attacking anything in their path. Was this going to be the same?
He didn't like it, but he knew it wouldn't do any good to hope that such wasn't the case. It was better to prepare for it, and he knew Aqua and Terra would do the same.
Thus was why the boy decided to contact Saber. She'd mentioned she was a fighter, and Ventus just had the feeling that she was probably pretty good at it. Saber just came off as a strong person to him in general, so he was curious to see what she was capable of.
"-that is, if you're not busy, of course..." he added as he spoke over the Link. "I'll be out by the lake."

i kind of tend to die on my weekends. sorry. orz.
The Link connection was cut off, but that was fairly typical of Saber. She seemed somewhat new to the idea of communication of devices, and she was. And perhaps due to her personality, good-byes and other such things on calls seemed a bit redundant.
After all, she'd see him very soon.
Traveling at a decent speed, it'd take her around twenty minutes or so to arrive. And with coming about thirty feet of the lake, as usual, she stopped her higher pace of movement to settle into a walk.
The boy mentioned wanting to practice magic, and Saber was definitely someone fit for the job. Her Magic Resistance rank of A meant that anything he did would not even affect her unless it was also Rank A. And she highly doubted that Ventus had such magical capabilities.
*Hug* 'sokay~ dun worry about it
While he waited, Ventus worked on a few swings with his Keyblade, taking a few slashes at an invisible foe.

"I am ready, whenever you are. ..I am quite magic resistant, so you may do your worst."
She was pretty confident in those words, even if they could sound somewhat ridiculous. Someone volunteering for someone to do their worst with magic must have had a death wish, didn't they? Well, in Saber's case, it wasn't like that at all.
((Know I've mentioned it before, but poor Ventus wouldn't even be able to touch her with his magic. I want to reiterate that so you don't feel I'm godmoding or something. She'll "receive" the spell, but it'll basically cancel out and do her no damage. She's the best target practice, really!))
no subject
"Are...you sure?" he asked, just because he felt he should. Saber did sound pretty confident, after all. Those words didn't seem like boasting so much as fact.
((Got it! xD))
no subject
"I appreciate your hesitation, truly. But yes, I really mean to try whatever you wish on me. After you're comfortable, if you'd like, I can begin to move around and.. act as a sort of target, I suppose."
Saber raises a hand to her chin in thought. That would help, wouldn't it? Having always refused to use magic herself, she is not so sure entirely about the mechanics, but the magic users she knew had sometimes made it seem as if accuracy in spells was as important as the power behind it.
no subject
"So you're just going to stand there?" he asked, scratching his head. That just seemed a little awkward. It was one thing for him to be just throw magic attacks at something that wasn't fighting back- but was alive, but to do so to someone stationary wasn't anything he'd considered.
"...I guess we can try it like that."
no subject
Saber could be extremely agile. She suddenly darted to his one side and away, a trail of green following after her, and then she'd stop for a moment and then dart in another direction again. She wasn't going her fastest, but it was still impressively fast and would be hard for someone to hit.
She just figured he'd feel uneasy about casting a spell on her without her fighting back, so wanted him to warm to the idea, first. If he wanted a moving target, though, he had it!
After all, there was no better way to test your magic than seeing how much you could put behind it without worry of harming someone you didn't want to. Saber hoped he'd see that and take advantage of it. After all, when else could he go all out on his magic ability and not worry?
no subject
"Okay, here goes," the boy murmured, pushing off to start after Saber. She was fast! Once he felt he had a good shot, Ventus swung his Keyblade forward as he focused his magic.
Red light gathered at the tip of the weapon, and he fired it off, a flaming ball that streamed towards where he anticipated the girl to be. He was already moving to find another angle to throw a follow up.
no subject
He wasn't a bad shot, then! His magic was not quite what she was expecting. Saber was used to flashier and grander types of magic. His seemed to be more of a projectile and much more simple, something like Tohsaka's Gandr. It was efficient in its own way. Since the lad was already able to hit her and was appearing to ready himself for more, she picked up her speed. Not only that, but the knight began to run farther away. She'd move around him within a thirty foot radius, but it gave her more directions she could suddenly turn towards so that she wasn't moving as predictably. Her lines were shorter, to, so there were more changes in direction.
no subject
Not sure that he could keep pace with her, the boy would at least try to get within a better range. He was the quickest of the Keyblade trio, after all, and what he lacked in strength, he made up for it by relying on his ability to move.
It was easier to get into the mindset of things when Saber was making herself a tougher target to hit. Ventus whipped around again with his Keyblade, sending another shot of Fira towards her. He hopped up, swinging his weapon skyward for a different magic- and though Thunder wasn't on quite par with the levels the other magic he had, it was harder to determine where to dodge when the lightning crackled downwards at its target.
no subject
The fire spell he used could be seen out of the corner of her eye, but she continued on her planned course. Saber picked out where she would turn and to where ahead of time, which kept her from involuntarily dodging his spells. It was hard to calm her instincts and tell them to let her be hit or nearly hit.
As the flames flickered off her arm, she suddenly had the urge to look upwards. Unable to ignore it, she stopped suddenly and looked upwards as she saw a flicker of light. Jumping to the side, she managed to propel herself about ten feet to the left. It was just enough to dodge the lightning.
And then the knight realized this was his spell. Turning towards him, she lowered her upper form in an apologetic bow.
"I apologize!" she claimed, loud enough for him to hear, "I wasn't expecting such a thing."
Saber was apologizing for not just acting as a moving target. Lightning was not a common element she had seen being able to be manipulated, so it was quite surprising. And it was hard to ignore the desire to move when one looks up and sees something moving towards them.
Settling back into her movement, she began to dart around at the same pace again.
no subject
The boy had started to run towards her again when she'd stopped and bowed. He pulled up short, blinking in confusion. "Huh?" Why she was apologizing for dodging didn't really make sense at first, but once she began to move once more, Ventus scratched his head before kicking back into gear as well.
If he kept this up, he'd only tire himself out, he began to realize- not to mention that casting spells repeatedly would only wear him down faster. On consideration, it was probably better to figure how well that worked now than in the middle of a serious fight.
Moving forward again, he took a leap as he swung around with his Keyblade, but no flames followed this movement. The wind picked up within the area Saber moved through, several little whirlwinds forming to try and surround her.
no subject
Now, Saber had to ask him something. He was able to use .. what was this, three elements? In her world, that would be considered something.. beyond normal. One or two were considered the normal, and anymore were for those extremely talented.
Walking over to him calmly, she tilted her head at him as her curiosity showed in her facial features.
"Is.. using multiple elements where you come from normal?"
((Changing pace, I realize rping this kind of thing might get tiring!))
no subject
"I...guess? Terra and Aqua can use the same magic, anyway."
((Hehehe! *thumbs up*))
i always loved the ff/kh magic systems.
That sounds somewhat handy. With all of the spells and abilities possible from her own world, one can't even keep track. There were elements to be used, and then variations of them depending on the mage's innate ability, and then..
Saber rolled her shoulders once in thought, and then crossed her arms.
"Regardless, is this working for you? If anything, you are able to test your magical limits against a target without worry of retaliation. This is your training, so please let me know if you wish me to change what I am doing."
Did he want her to dodge, maybe? Or.. perhaps even fight back? She wasn't a magic user, though. Maybe he'd have a better idea. She was none too sure what he was expecting when he asked her to assist with magic training to begin with.
xD
The boy tilted his head, considering their earlier attempts. "I guess in just going for a moving target, it's not bad. Usually when I think of training, it would involve the other person fighting back, though. Most of the magic I know is meant to be used offensively, anyway, so using it in action makes sense, doesn't it? ...or should I work on focusing or something..."
no subject
Raising a hand to her chin temporarily, Saber thinks for a moment. ..She'd likely know how to train with magic if she had any actual spells. Beyond her manipulation of wind acting as barriers, she had none.
no subject
Since he wasn't making use of his Keyblade, Ventus let it vanish for the time being, folding his arms in thought.
"I guess it was okay how we were doing things just then. It's just a little weird throwing attacks at someone who isn't fighting back."
no subject
"Would you like me to .. pursue you with my blade?"
She would most likely be the one moving forward and him moving backwards while casting, which didn't seem like ideal magic practice to her. Saber couldn't assume for him, especially since she was no magic user.
This was also his magic practice, so if Ventus wished her to mock attack him, she would.
no subject
"I'm not sure if that would help," Ventus considered as he stroked his chin. "I mean, well...it might, but then when magic just kinda fizzles off of you, it would make it harder for me to know how effective it was." He brought his hand back to scratch his head.
"But I guess it wouldn't hurt to practice some defense on my part either. What do you think?"
no subject
"If you'd like, certainly."
Saber had encountered this problem upon arriving. She had been challenged several times, but the issue was that when she trained with someone, she was usually holding back - it was awkward for the knight and usually her partner could tell, however..
It didn't sound like he just wanted to outright fight her and best her as the others had. He wanted to practice defense. So this may work much better for them both.
"I will pursue you," she started, holding out her hands as the greatsword appeared in them. Already enveloped in the curtain of wind, it was mostly invisible. Only the moving air could be seen. "I will start out slowly, and if you wish for me to go to the next level, then please let me know."
Even at her "slowest" he'd likely find he'd have a bit of difficulty blocking and negating the large sword and her precise moves, but they'd see.
no subject
Grinning a little now that they'd come to a solution, Ventus hopped back, Wayward Wind flashing into being within his grasp. He could vaguely make out Saber's weapon, at least enough to tell that it was pretty big.
"Okay, got it," the boy replied, flipping his Keyblade around in his reverse grip as he raised it defensively.
no subject
It was a diagonal from her top left to bottom right, and even with the knight saying she would start "slow", the weight of the sword and the pressure behind it was something to appreciate.
Regardless of how he handled the first swing, Saber would begin to settle into a pattern of swings coming from various directions and angles. They'd have some time between them for Ventus to briefly recover, but they'd continue. She was used to training with many, and wouldn't let up unless he specifically voiced he wished her to.
After all, she would want no one to go easy on her unless told.
All of the swings carried a fair amount of power, something even an experienced warrior or sword user of any type would have trouble with in combination with her precise movements.
no subject
He twisted to the side, trying to divert the weight of her sword, and immediately he leveled his Keyblade, renewing his grip just in time as the girl resumed her strikes, continuing on the offense. He could feel each strike reverberate through his arm, finding it was easier to just shift his weapon to intercept the blows rather than directly move to meet them. It seemed like a better idea considering how strong her attacks were.
It was almost like fighting with Terra. The older Keyblade wielder had a lot of power behind his swings, although Ventus had a feeling that Saber was possibly capable of worse- a sort of frightening but at the same time amazing thing to consider. It reminded the boy that he had a long way to go after all.
Ventus wasn't about to ask Saber to go easy on him when he felt she was probably already holding back. He'd seen her moving earlier, after all. His grasp tightening upon his Keyblade, his expression grew more serious as he concentrated on where Saber's attacks came from. His evasions and clashes were a little clumsy, sometimes barely managing to block in time, but at least the boy seemed to be working to adjust with the blows. He had a feeling his arm was going to be sore by the end of this though.
no subject
Words were not a part of battle, so she remained silent as she continued to swing at him. Saber varied the directions and angles as much as possible for Ventus, and the time between the swings remained predictable. He was obviously struggling to catch her blade, so there was no reason to cause it to be harder for him. The power behind the swings remained the same, as well. The fact that she could keep her timing the same and the force behind the swings so precise was a sign of her discipline and skill with the blade.
Poor lad, though. Ventus would definitely feel this in his arm in the morning. Her face remained indifferent, but there was a friendly light in her eyes as they trained.
no subject
When he lifted his head, he wore a determined expression, but it was softened with a smile. Rising to his feet again, he prepared himself for another barrage. It was pretty draining just trying to defend against such strikes, but he felt he still had a little more left to give.
no subject
That weapon he held .. it bewildered her. One would think it'd be hard to handle and unbalanced, but Ventus handled it as well as anyone would handle any normal bladed weapon.
no subject
His movements gradually became more minimal with each passing strike as Saber made. He was really starting to feel it in his arm now, but before he could make the suggestion to stop, he found his weapon flying out of his grip from a following blow.
The boy fell back, at least having enough presence of mind to avoid Saber's blade as he let himself land completely on the floor. It wasn't the most graceful evasion, but whatever worked. Ventus lay on his back for a moment before trying to push himself up, wincing.
no subject
"You did rather spectacularly. I am impressed."
Saber was not the flattery type, but it was up to him how he felt about her words. For someone with such a strange weapon and what she could assume to be his age and his size, Ventus did miraculously well. After all, she did not underestimate herself; that's what her opponents did when they fell.
Training was certainly over, at least for today, so the veiled sword disappeared from her other hand. She lowered that one to him as well so he could grip both hands for more leverage if he wished.
no subject
"Really?"
Coming from Saber, those words left an impression. After all, despite this being the first time he'd ever seen her abilities, it was more than obvious she was a master at using her weapon.
He pulled up his other hand to take hold of Saber's; it was probably better to use both for leverage when his right was still a little shaky. His Keyblade had vanished the moment it had hit the ground, so at least he didn't have to worry about retrieving it. "Thanks."
no subject
"Are you alright?" she asked, concerned about his arm. From receiving blows such as that and repeatedly, even bruising could occur although no direct damage was done.
"It is best to call training off before your body does it for you."
She was gently scolding him for allowing himself to fall before he quit, but it was said in a gentle way.
no subject
"...that's probably a good idea though," he admitted.
no subject
Closing her eyes for a moment, she brought her hands together in front of herself and then nodded.
She was letting him gather himself, since he did seem somewhat off-settled still. Saber hoped the lad was smart enough to refrain from physical activity until at least the next morning.
no subject
Well, save for his sore, tired arm, but he remembered his training with Terra hadn't been very easy either, at first. Turning, Ventus looked out towards the lake for a moment.
"I don't know about you, but I wouldn't mind sitting down for a while. Come join me?" he asked as he glanced back at Saber. She didn't look like she'd broken a sweat, but given how she'd been attacking, the boy couldn't find himself very surprised.
socially awkward saber is awkward
Walking over to Ventus, she waited for him to either pick a spot or drop to the ground. Wherever he went, she'd sit beside him.
Saber couldn't help but find herself wishing she was a better conversationalist. Ventus was quite interesting and seemed accomplished for what might be his age. Maybe that was a start.. she could ask him his age. Or would that seem awkward?
Her face furrowed slightly in disappointment with herself.
B'aaw xD
"You're really strong, Saber," he said, breaking the proverbial ice for her. "You must have really practiced a lot, huh."
no subject
She closed her eyes before she spoke, as the topic caused her to think about it briefly.
"My entire life has been centered around my blade."
The knight had never quite thought of that before; she would mostly say it revolved around being a knight and then king, but the basis of all of that was her sword, was it not?
no subject
It hadn't been long before it was decided that he'd join Terra and Aqua in their training to become a Keyblade Master, however. That was the only thing that seemed to fit.
no subject
She was guessing sixteen approximately. As she asked, Saber looked at him curiously.
"I suppose it is rude to ask without offering the information. I was twenty-four when I died."
She had spent some time in the Grail Wars and now here, but not enough for it to be a year to consider herself twenty-five. Besides, she wouldn't physically age. Really, there was no point in counting days for her anymore.
What a sad thought.
no subject
Saber's further words brought his attention back to her instantly. He blinked, wondering if he'd heard right.
"-when you...died? What do you mean?"
no subject
There was no harm in sharing this considering no one on Cybertron had anything to do with any Grail Wars, and she was here without the assistance of the Grail. Still, it was somewhat.. strange to be able to explain that to someone. Or have to. In the Wars, everyone knew what a Heroic Spirit was.
no subject
"...wow..." he said, although he wondered if that was the right thing to say. But it did sound a little impressive. A Heroic Spirit, huh. A tiny smile flickered on his face, as though not sure whether it was supposed to be there or not. "No wonder you're so strong. I...I'm sorry to hear you died, but if you were brought back, then you must really have been needed."
no subject
"Do you believe so? That was .. nice to hear; thank you, Ventus."
During the Grail Wars, she knew she had been summoned due to all who knew of her even after her death, but she had thought nothing of it. Only the goals and the battles had been in her mind. So to be reminded that she was summoned because she had been needed, even if passively.. it was pleasant.
"If I remember correctly, you said you were also chosen by your blade. I was chosen by mine when I was alive. Would you be able to tell me .. about that?"
She couldn't help but be curious; after all, how many other people did she know had been chosen by their weapon, someway or another? Or perhaps he was chosen by something else and the weapon went along with it? That was still close.
no subject
"Ah, that's right. I actually can't remember how I got chosen. ...just like a lot of other things." He only knew that he probably wouldn't have been taken to Master Eraqus and the others if he hadn't been able to use one. Even his earliest memories of his arrival in the Land of Departure were fuzzy at best. "
I think Keyblade wielders can sort of be chosen by previous masters. Terra always used to quote some kind of oath, anyway."
no subject
She was well aware he had lost her memory ever since he told her, but it seemed most things she wished to ask were behind that veil of things he had forgotten. After all, he was young, and it seemed he lost his memories of most of his life.
She didn't feel sorry for him, especially since he seemed to have no negativity towards that anymore, but she did feel it was quite inconvenient for the lad. And something that was better if it hadn't happened.
"You call it a keyblade. I know you also mentioned the Keyblades having to do with light. ..Ah, silly question I suppose, but does it.. act as a key somehow, too?"
Whoa what happened to my quotes back there, whoops xD;
Ventus smiled weakly, turning his gaze towards he lake again. He listened as Saber spoke up once more, nodding slowly in response.
"It does," he replied, looking back at her. "It can open most locks on anything. I was even surprised to find it worked on the doors around here, and they don't have visible locks either."
no subject
Although she was being serious, there was a slight softness in her voice. She highly doubted he was the type, but such a key would be quite handy to get into places you likely didn't belong.
