There have not been other machines like us in production. Previous generations could last a few decades at least, but by that point their software was too out of date to be useful. I did not expect that we would be top-of-the line police robots for more than a few years.

[At which point, they'd be replaced. He'd thought on it before. He didn't...like to think on it. There were no laws to regulate the treatment of robots on Earth, because there had not been robots like him for very long.]
